Over the weekend I got a little curious about how product managers prioritize their stories and features if they don’t have access to tools like Aha! or ProdPad. As a product manager, I often struggle to prioritize features and tasks in a more objective manner, RICE provides a powerful formula to take the objectivity out of the equation. Now at my job, we use Aha! which comes baked in with prioritization and scoring frameworks. I was wondering though for people who don’t have tools like this, is there a simple calculator out there to help them out? I started doing some Google searches to see if RICE calculators existed in the top results on Google. Lo and behold, there were a bunch of articles explaining what RICE is, with the formula of course, but I was shocked to see none of them actually included a simple RICE calculator. For those that don’t know, RICE scoring is a method that helps in making data-driven decisions by scoring features, projects, or tasks based on Reach, Impact, Confidence, and Effort. See this article for the calculator and more info on RICE. I wanted to create a plugin that would allow users to calculate RICE scores quickly and efficiently. This is where ChatGPT came into play and is a prime example of how powerful AI can be when it comes to assisting with complex tasks. Through a series of prompts and iterations, I was able to develop a fully functional and user-friendly plugin that can be easily embedded in any WordPress site. In this article, I will share my experience using ChatGPT to create a custom WordPress plugin for RICE scoring.

The Process:

Step 1: The idea

My first prompt to ChatGPT was to create a RICE calculator application that could be embedded in a WordPress site. ChatGPT provided me with an initial version of the code, which included the basic structure and functionality for the calculator.

My first prompt

Step 2: Making it a true WordPress plugin

Since I know a little bit about WordPress, and how it requires plugins to have shortcodes to call them, I needed to have it adapt the code a bit to be a wordpress plugin. I requested ChatGPT to provide me the PHP. ChatGPT provided me with detailed instructions on how to create the plugin files and structure, including a PHP file for the plugin, which I followed to create the initial version of my RICE calculator plugin.

Step 3: Refining the User Interface

I wanted the calculator to have a more user-friendly interface, with sliders and text inputs. ChatGPT guided me through the process of modifying the HTML and JavaScript code to include sliders for each input field, and also ensured that the sliders and text inputs were synchronized.

Step 4: Troubleshooting and Iteration

After implementing the changes, I encountered a few issues with the plugin, such as no output and a missing CSS file. ChatGPT helped me troubleshoot these problems by providing detailed instructions on how to fix them, which ultimately led to a fully functional and visually appealing RICE calculator plugin.

Step 5: Final Touches

With the plugin working correctly, I made a few final adjustments based on ChatGPT’s prior guidance. I had it create an SEO-friendly title for the page containing the RICE calculator. The title required some refinement, but it did a great job with the first pass. Finally, I designed an engaging Instagram post to promote the article and drive traffic to the plugin’s page. Conclusion:

My experience using ChatGPT to create a custom WordPress plugin for RICE scoring was nothing short of jaw-dropping. Through a series of prompts and iterations, ChatGPT provided valuable guidance and support, enabling me to develop a fully functional and visually appealing plugin. This powerful AI tool not only made the development process more accessible but also helped me save a tremendous amount of time and effort.
